Drove cultural and organizational change to help transform Juniper from a hardware company into a systems and software company. Instituted much needed software engineering principles across Juniper. Provided focus to Juniper’s software efforts and eliminated unnecessary business units. Restructured the security business by replacing leadership, fixing software quality issues, and establishing thought leadership in datacenter security. Drove Juniper’s Software Defined Networking effort and launched our Contrail SDN Controller. Created the networking industry’s first coherent software licensing model.

Built a highly cohesive leadership team that reliably delivered on-time, high-quality releases of Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio, and System Center products. Directed Microsoft’s transformation from product-centricity into a business services company with Office 365, Windows Azure, and Windows InTune services. Consistently delivered above-market growth every fiscal year, driving revenue from $9.7B in FY06 to $17.1B in FY11, with operating income climbing from $3.5B to $6.6B. Built long-term, win-win relationships across the company and with Microsoft customers and partners.

Facilitated Microsoft’s transition to consumer services and devices with responsibility for Hotmail, Messenger, and Passport. Started and ultimately shut-down the Hailstorm project. Drove Pocket PC and the initial release of Windows Phone.

Led the team that delivered the Office 2000 suite of products. Acquired Visio Corporation. Resurrected Microsoft’s developer strategy by creating .NET and C# after Microsoft lost the Java lawsuit. Testified in Washington, D.C. at the Microsoft antitrust trial.

Established the first integrated Microsoft Server Applications business that brought together Exchange, SQL Server, Systems Management Server, SNA Server, and BackOffice.

Created the integrated developer team that first combined Visual Basic and C++ into Visual Studio. Initiated Microsoft's Internet developer focus with Visual InterDev.

Led the team that defined the specification for Windows NT. Managed the release process for Windows NT 3.1, 3.5, 3.51, and 4. Drove the specification and delivered the SDK for the Win32 API.

Participated in Microsoft’s transition from OS/2 to Windows NT. Presented this strategy change at both the internal decision-making meeting and public announcement in 1991.
