CEO & Founder (OpenDNS)
2005 - 2015
I drove the vision, hired incredible talent, and made sure the team had everything they need to deliver an innovative, effective, and successful security service. We were backed by a terrific group of board members and investors including: Michael Goguen @ Sequoia Capital, Dave Strohm @ Greylock Partners, and Stefan Dyckerhoff @ Sutter Hill Ventures. I was the Founder, CEO and occasional nighttime janitor. I couldn't be more proud of our entire team and all that we accomplished.
2013 - 2016
Board Member
2013 - 2016
Due to my commitments at Cisco I have stepped back from serving on the board of this incredible organization. I will continue to support the foundation as a donor and friend. The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth in disadvantaged communities. Since 2002, the foundation has provided more than 500 grants and community support to enable the creation of public skateboard parks that promote healthy, active lifestyles and positive after-school activities.
2005 - 2016
Advisor
2005 - 2016
Due to my commitments at Cisco I have stopped advising startups. I don't have time to be an advisor right now, so I'll help you help yourself. Every two or three weeks you should send out an email to your close circle with the following: 1) What'd you say you were going to do? 2) What'd you do? Highlights and Lowlights. How'd it go? What would have been better? 3) What are you going to do next? 4) What keeps you up at night? If you do that, you'll already be more focused than most CEOs.
2015 - 2016
Board Member
2015 - 2016
Due to my commitments at Cisco I have decided to step back from my role as a member of the board of directors. I will continue to root for this terrific company from the sidelines. Kentik is the traffic intelligence company, offering the industry's first purpose-built big data SaaS platform that turns huge volumes of NetFlow and other network data into actionable insights. Assure service delivery, detect DDoS, optimize Internet routing, and unleash innovation with unbounded ad-hoc traffic analysis at scale.
2001 - 2010
Founder
2001 - 2010
[ In January, 2010, I sold the company to Dyn Inc.] I founded EveryDNS.Net and have watched it grow to become the world's largest free DNS service. Together with a team of outstanding volunteers we manage a global userbase providing 100% uptime and full customer service. EveryDNS has been cash positive since its inception using our revenue to drive our growth and maintain our well-respected stability. We have servers located within strategic network points in North Amerca and Europe with plans to expand into the Asia and Pacific Rim regions.
2004 - 2005
Director of Network Operations
2004 - 2005
I made sure that all the 1's and 0's got to the right people at the right time at the right place -- 24x7x365. I built a low cost network that scaled reliably from 30-40 million daily pageviews to over 350 million daily pageviews on a budget of under $200,000. This was a multi-homed network spanning three datacenters across the country built on commodity hardware and custom software.
2002 - 2005
Director of Operations
2002 - 2005
This job has been taken over by the capable and talented Mr. John Glass.
2003 - 2004
Network Operations Assistant
2003 - 2004
I was the first student to ever hold this role.
