Mark researched information flow and communication paradigms to help improve the efficiency and accuracy of the Usability team's internal operations. With his findings, he redesigned and built several new enterprise Ruby on Rails applications to manage the increasingly complex flow of information. He also designed several custom mass storage and media distribution systems for capturing, maintaining, and distributing our internal usability data on a global scale, at a time when true HD streaming in realtime was only feasible in local editing environments. I also developed several other new products currently in development within the company, providing both consumer and developer input.
User Experience Researcher (Intern)
2006 - 2006
Hired as as a User Experience Researcher Intern at the Mountain View headquarters focusing on Mobile applications. Mark designed and conducted 7 different usability studies on new and existing Google products in just 3 months. In addition to traditional research, Mark helped design from scratch and test a new Mobile Observation System. It utilized a non-intrusive lightweight apparatus that attached to any mobile device. Great efforts were made to miniaturize the setup and simplify the system to allow complete operation from a single laptop. This enabled researchers to conduct more real-world field studies worldwide. His work on this system led to his co-application for a patent on the system. Mark's team also submitted a winning paper to the 2007 CHI Usability conference. Mark also saved the company more than 75% of his budget for building a new video distribution server by using innovative and cross-platform technologies to legally save on licensing costs while providing the most efficient services possible.
