Recruited to deliver a number of multi-million dollar R&D programs and technology commercialization initiatives in the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Gas Processing space. In addition to managing company engineering and technology development efforts, role includes portfolio management of technology development opportunities to best meet business needs, management of 3rd party technology providers and engineering contractors, as well as engagement of Chevron operating units to promote technology adoption etc. Key deliverables have included deploying new technology developed from this R&D program in a $M 100 investment in Australia (>50% IRR), and transferring new technology out of Chevron to a third party in a technology licensing agreement.

Member of the Board of Directors of Abakan Inc. (OTCQB:ABKI), a publicly traded oil-field services technology company with market capitalisation ~$150 MM, that through its subsidiary Mesocoat develops, manufactures, and markets corrosion protective coatings for pipelines, flowlines and down-hole equipment for deployment in ultra-harsh environments. In addition to serving on the Board and on Board Committees, my role was to provide strategic guidance to the company with regards to finalising commercialisation of its products, as well as with developing strategic alliances, and fund raising. Also served part time as Entrepreneur in Residence at the newly launched Texas A&M Clean Energy Incubator (TAMCEI), which seeks to offer global entrepreneurs a best-in-class business incubation environment for the development and commercialisation of clean energy technologies. Responsibility is for leading in advising TAMCEI on new opportunities for new venture engagements, evaluating the commercial readiness and investability of clean energy technologies, creating strong executive start-up teams and developing actionable business models for early stage companies.

Recruited at time of company founding to manage operations and project development at Ping Petroleum, an oil & gas start-up company seeking to build a business in Malaysia and the North Sea focusing on brownfield developments and marginal fields. Together with Energy XXI (3rd biggest oil and gas producer in the Gulf of Mexico shelf), Ping Petroleum came very close to becoming a significant operator of oil and gas assets in country, and has recently acquired a 50% interest in the North Sea Anasuria asset from Shell with JV partner Hibiscus Petroleum. While focusing primarily on issues associated with projects and operations (acquisition due diligence, building contractor and service provider relationships, staffing etc.), my involvement included a broad range of activities including project economics, fund raising, reviewing joint venture/operating agreements, PSC terms, etc.

Lead Facilities Engineer/Engineering Manager position for the Marlin TLP in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Responsible for managing all engineering and brownfield project work executed by a team of BP engineers and the primary engineering contractor (Worley Parsons). Accountability for ensuring successful execution of all brownfield projects with regards to safety, technical viability, cost, and schedule. Responsibility for production optimisation initiatives, which contributed to Marlin achieving a production record 10 years after start-up. From April to October 2010 lead engineering role associated with developing containment options on surface vessels associated with containing hydrocarbons from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill
Executive Personal Adviser to the VP Exploration and Production Technology

Executive Personal Adviser to the VP running an organisation of 700 technology professionals based primarily in London and Houston. This organisation formed BP’s central technology and engineering consultancy for worldwide E&P operations. Wide range of responsibilities included helping co-ordinate the VP’s direct reports, helping formulate/execute technology strategies, support execution of organisational restructuring, preparing communications materials for internal and external audiences (e.g. within the VP’s organisation, investment bankers, BP Board of Directors, etc.). Position required involvement with C level BP management on a regular basis from which I benefited enormously as a leader. Additional responsibilities held for “special projects” during this period as Executive Personal Adviser: 1. Designed, project managed and delivered a new, high quality video-conferencing facility to link Houston and London for more effective cross Atlantic team collaboration, at a fraction of the cost of commercially available solutions (project budget ~$1 million). 2. Initiated a Research and Development program with two leading international universities and a $500k annual budget looking at exploiting nano-technology for the in-situ upgrading of heavy oil. Responsibility for negotiating contractual terms with the universities involved (financial, intellectual property etc.), establishing R&D work scopes, setting expectations with University professors and management of research staff etc.
Lead Process/Project Engineer

Two and a half year secondment from BP into partner company Chevron for engineering work leading up to FID on the 5 MMTPA Angola LNG project, with contracting strategy selected by the project owners as a competitive FEED and lump-sum EPC bid between Bechtel (ConocoPhillips Optimized Cascade Process) and a consortium of KBR/JGC/Technip (Air Products Technology). Involved in Pre-FEED and concept selection studies with contractor (KJT), followed by lead process engineering role during FEED, particularly OSBL. Responsibility for ensuring contractor was developing a design for the facility that met owner specifications with regards to engineering design, project capital and life-cycle costs, operating safety, operability, plant efficiency, productivity and environmental criteria. Responsibility for reviewing and approving engineering documentation including PFDs, P&Ids, heat and material balances on behalf of project owners, as well as participating in HAZOPS, HSE reviews, value improvement workshops etc. Subsequent overall lead process engineering role post FEED supporting the bid evaluation process from the two contractors and award of the EPC contract.
Process Engineer with BP Upstream Technology Group, LNG and Gas to Liquids Team

Provided consultancy and engineering services to a wide variety of natural gas related projects in the areas of Liquefied Natural Gas, Gas to Liquids, Natural Gas Liquids and Pipelines. Key achievements: 1. Led the development of an innovative software tool for the design and optimisation of oil and gas pipelines. The tool is now a standard within BP and used regularly to evaluate pipeline opportunities worldwide. 2. Led the design effort of a $15 million project to upgrade a gas/condensate receiving facility in Trinidad to handle gas supply to four LNG manufacturing plants. 3. Provided techno-economic support to BP Trinidad business development team in negotiating commercial and operating terms of a 36-inch/56-inch pipeline system. 4. Executed a pre-Appraise level feasibility study for a 2.5 bscfd NGL plant in Trinidad 5. Carried out techno-economic evaluations of Gas to Liquids technologies for potential future commercial scale plants. 6. Provided process engineering expertise on HAZOPs (Hazard and Operability) and HSE reviews on a range of upstream projects 7. Developed an innovative process for manufacturing LNG for which BP has been granted a patent (United States Patent 7637121)
Commissioning and Start-Up Engineer

Managed the engineering contractor through the commissioning and start-up phase of a facilities upgrade project on a new 30,000 bbls/d North Sea development. Ensured on schedule start-up of the facility and safe hand-over to the Operations Team, including optimisation of process facilities. Also worked closely with commercial and legal teams to develop a metering and hydrocarbon allocation method/model for the development.
