Responsible for Product, Engineering, Data, Program Management, Security, and Customer Support across all of Strava’s products and services. Strava is the leading social platform for athletes, motivating over 100 million athletes in 195 countries to stay active every day. In a decade at Strava, I grew from tech lead to CPTO leading an organization of 200+ teammates. It was an incredible journey of growth for both me and the company: - We grew our community 100x to over 100 million members. We scaled revenue even more with a digital subscription product at the core of the business. - I was a key contributor to product market fit expansion from an initial cycling niche into the sport of running. Today, running is the most popular sport on Strava. - We executed a monetization bet in 2020 that changed the revenue trajectory of the business and led to profitability. - I owned long term product strategy and the product roadmap, supporting teams focused on core experience, user acquisition and retention, subscription growth and retention, Strava’s external API, and underlying platform capabilities (e.g. mapping /routing, activity processing, leaderboards, etc). - I led through multiple phases of rapid user growth, including a massive burst at the start of the COVID pandemic. Strava’s community has shared ~10 billion activities on the platform, and we scaled data-centric infrastructure every step of the way with high standards for performance and reliability. - I supported M&A from strategy through operational diligence for three acquisitions (ProKit, Recover Athletics, FATMAP). Previously: - Chief Technology Officer: Apr 2021 - Apr 2022 - VP of Engineering: Nov 2018 - Apr 2021 - Interim Head of Engineering: Apr 2018 - Nov 2018 - Senior Director of Product Engineering: Nov 2017 - Apr 2018 - Director of Infrastructure Engineering: Jun 2016 - Nov 2017 - Engineering Manager, Platform: Jan 2015 - Jun 2016 - Software Engineer and Tech Lead: Mar 2013 - Jan 2015
2012 - 2013
Lead Platform Engineer
2012 - 2013
I spent a year at a founder-funded startup working on a team of four. We explored product ideas in the realm of user scripting, browser extensions, and personal customization of the web. We prototyped heavily on a platform that would allow consumers to do everything from blocking ads on the web to re-theming Facebook at the click of a button. I was responsible for full stack engineering including browser extension and bookmarklet development (JavaScript), data service APIs (Node.js), and production deployment (Heroku).
2010 - 2012
Senior Software Engineer
2010 - 2012
Songbird was a customizable, cross-platform media player distributed both directly to consumers and via white label to some of the largest consumer electronics companies on the planet (e.g. Philips, Hewlett-Packard). I worked on all aspects of the web platform and desktop client as a tech lead at Songbird, including system architecture and design, full stack coding, and production deployment. Working with a cross-functional team of product managers, designers, and engineers, I developed consumer-facing web applications as well as RESTful data APIs consumed by the desktop and mobile Songbird media players.
