Our aim is to increase the stability of the platinum catalyst on the cathode of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell. This is done by providing an alternative catalyst support to carbon black, which is thermodynamically unstable at tested ORR potentials due to weak Van der Waals forces. We have analyzed various methods to produce a more stable catalyst support including the synthesis and tuning of silica based templates, varying surface functionality of the support by addition of electronegative particles as well as altering of the carbon source to produce different structure and pore size of the catalyst support. Other duties include: •synthesizing silica templates •synthesizing the carbon support from silica templates •deposition of platinum catalyst on various carbon support structures •preparation and painting of catalyst layers for fuel cell diagnostics

  • Laboratory and Field Technician Intern

    2011 - 2011

The goal of the internship was to educate the intern on the fundamentals of environmental remediation and the specific methods used by VeruTEK to provide a long-term solution for contaminated areas. The intern learned the chemistry behind VeruTEK's remediation process as well as the injection method used to ensure a complete treatment of contaminants in project sites. The intern was required to perform lab-work and assist in the remediation process at various hazardous waste project sites throughout New England. My responsibilities included: •Collect ground-water samples from various contamination sites •Perform chemical and parameter analysis on ground-water samples in both a laboratory and field-laboratory setting •Assist in the start-up implementation and maintenance of injection apparatus on a daily basis •Report project status and progress to contractors in an analytical and professional setting •Utilize Microsoft Excel to compile catalogs of extensive ground-water data for separate projects •Report on status and progress of catalogs to supervisor in a professional setting •Ensure the following of strict HAZWOPER safety guidelines
