Ecoworks has developed a platform for serial renovation to reduce emissions at scale by improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings. The company’s use of digital tools and automated manufacturing dramatically reduces the cost of retrofitting apartment blocks. Prefabricated insulation panels are installed on the outside of existing buildings to limit heat loss while bundling renewable energy generation installations into the same project. Ecoworks thus delivers a reduction in energy loss and electrifies heating systems in a single construction project, dramatically lowering the operational carbon footprint of a building. The pre-fabricated cladding slots together in large panels that come complete with integrated windows and can incorporate other external features like balconies. CyanoCapture has developed a cost-effective, low-energy carbon capture, utilization and storage technology (CCUS) that is able to capture carbon emissions in flu gases from large industrial installations such as factories and refineries. The solution consists of a novel photobioreactor and a genetically modified cyanobacteria strain that is highly efficient in capturing CO2 from flue gases. Cyanobacteria commonly occur in nature and capture a significant portion of global carbon emissions, while also producing a significant amount of the world’s oxygen. Material Evolution has developed a groundbreaking geopolymer cement with a CO2 footprint that is 85% lower than ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The company’s one-part system is made with blends of solid alkaline activators and solid aluminosilicate precursors such as metakaolin, fly ash, slag, and other industrial waste streams. Unlike OPC this process does not require any heat – traditional cement is produced by burning limestone at very high temperatures to turn it into clinker, which is the main contributor to the high carbon footprint of OPC (~850-950kg per ton produced!). Material Evolution’s one-part system means that concrete can be produced by simply mixing water with cement. There is no need for additional chemical activators. The product can be tailored to customer specifications through the use of a proprietary algorithm that manages the formulation and complex interplay of the different ingredients during the activation process.
